Is this figure really there, or is it another case of finding an image in trees and leaves? It seems very large in comparison to the men. How large is the yowie supposed to be?

I think it's just a matter of seeing an image in the surrounding trees and bushes that really wasn't there, the psychological phenomenon known as pareidolia. Since the photo is in black and white any visual clues from the color of the surroundings is lost.
But if you look at the wrist, and legs, the limbs are far to thin to belong to a Yowie which like bigfoot is quite robust. The leg on the left of the frame isn't even there

There's also the matter of how did they not see the creature at that close of a range? It looks to be within 6 feet of them. To me it's impossible that they would not have noticed it while setting up for the camera shot, and I find it highly unlikely a Yowie would have tolerated their presence that close to them. Yowie are just as cagey as bigfoot, there is no way any Cryptid would allow itself to be approached that close out in the open and be photographed that easily. That's why they are cryptids.
