Has anyone tried using a Game Finder infrared tracker instead of thermal imaging? I have one I bought years ago and tried a few times hunting and it is WAY cheaper than a thermal imager. You just sweep it back and forth and watch the read out. The bigger the critter the higher the reading. It works great on people but I guess I did not use it enough to locate downed game animals to see how accurate it can be. It is now illegal to hunt with one in WA, so I was thinking about trying it out for BF. Any one had any luck with one?

I have one in my equipment kit, but have not had any success with it. I adjust it by scanning one of my research partners, and adjusting it so they just barely cause the lights to hit the red zone. Technically, anything larger will cause it to peak into the high red zone after this. The problem with them is the same for thermal imagers. Trees and leaves on the understory will block the unit from receiving a heat signature. Here in the NJ pine barrens, there is way too much vegetation for either to be used effectively during anything but winter months with little to no leaves on the trees. Overall though, I do still take it out with us and do a scan with it when we first arrive on site, and for the money it IS a cheap way to get thermal, but I just don't find it very useful.
