Ok well some of you along with me have been waiting for notes from the 2009 OLy Pen. Exp. Well hopefully this will start things off.. I know some stuff happened on this trip, I know of 3 things for sure that happened and I'm pretty sure other things happened also. Maybe some others will speak up, maybe not.. Anyway, let me start by saying that I thought that this was not going to be a very how shall I say, productive trip, because of the amount of the people that were on the trip. There were alot, more than 50, but not all were at the same camps. Camps were spread out for miles. Anyway, when I left home my normal time in the morning figuring I'd be at base camp by 11-12 noon. Figuring I'd be one of the first arrivals like I usually am and get a good camp spot at base camp. NOT...!!!! Base Camp was full when I arrived, my spot was taken. My spot where I had my encounter the year before I might add. I was like man, ok guess I take a drive. So headed out to look for a spot. Good thing the road that was gated the year before was opened and we could drive it. This road had a few camps here and there along it. This road is the same raod that we heard what sounded like a baby crying the year before. Anyway, I drove the road looking for a camp spot. Every time I found one it was taken. I finally found a spot about three miles from base camp. Thinking dang, this is a long way out to be by myself. I really wasn't though, there was a couple people from California camped about 100 yards before my camp. My camp was about 2 miles beyond where we heard the baby cry's the year before. OK now I'm not sure what days what happened, hopefully the ones it happened to will chime in. Anyway, I know for sure that main base camp got at least one visit on one night after everyone went to bed. The person this happened to was sleeping in the back of his pick up it had a canopy on it I believe. Anyway, he said he was sleeping like a baby when all of the sudden he woke out of a dead sleep. He said he don't know why he woke up, but he did. He said that when that happened he layed there and thought about what he was told if that ever happened. He said he was told not to just sit up. He said he was told to just kinda slowly lift his head to look around. And he did just that. He said he could see pretty good because there had been a tiny light left on in the cook tent. Anyway, he said he looked down towards his feet and out the back of his truck, tail gate was down. That's when he said he saw it. He said there was a Squatch squatted down at his camp table where he had his cook stove. ( his camp was about 4 feet from the edge of the woods ) Base camp was in an open area, like a dirt parking lot type deal bout 75 yards or so long by about 40 yards wide maybe. Anyway, he said he watched it for about a minute or so. Then he said he wanted to see wanted to see what time it was, so he looked at his watch. Couldn't see the time so he hit the lil illuminator light on his watch. ( Was around 3am if I remember right ) He said when he did that the animal looked at him and shook it's head like it was saying no. Then he said it took two steps back still in a crouch and was gone into the woods. He said that the things head was about 18inches long. He figured that because he said it's head was right next to his cook stove looking across the table at stuff. He said he had his wind gaurd on his stove and it is 15 inches tall. He the animals head was about 3 inches taller than the cook stove gaurd. Anyway, that is the base camp story, the guy was pretty stoked after it happened. OK another deal that happened was when some people were walking the roads. I myself wasn't with them. I was in my tent and I heard them talking outside. He kept saying man what the hell is that over there, I'm seeing something the thermal guys. looks like its moving back and fourth. It's not walking it's just, man what the hell is that I kept hearing. Then nothing, a few minutes later it was gone. They came back the next day and checked the area out couldn't really tell much. But they did figure out that what ever he was seeing was behind a stump. That's why he was only seeing it partially. So they set up a new thermal video cam thing they got and pointed it out in that field, but same ol story, nothing. And Saturday morning I think it was, was when my California neighbor asked me what happend in my camp last night.? I said nothing why, he said you sure? I said well I asleep, nothing that I know of why. He said dude, something walked through our camp last night, and it messed with the tarps laying on the ground. I said could it of been a deer or something. He said no, it was on two ft and it picked up the tarp. I think he thought it might of been me messing with them, but it wasn't. I don't do crap like that. And I myself did get something on my recorder, it sounds like a wood knock. But it sounds like wood on rock to me. Or maybe 2 baeball bats being hit together. And it was a lil while after a group walked past my camp. But nobody called and said they were gonna do a knock. So who know's. Well, so there you have it, that is what I know. Or what I think I know anyway. It was as always a fun trip. I'm sure other stuff happened and hopefully some people will speak up. Story's are always best when they come from the mouths that experienced it. Anyway, hopefully this will get some others to post what, if anything happened to them. Hope I don't dissapoint people by starting this and nobody chimes in.. Oh, and lights were seen too. But like I said It's up to them people to speak if they want to.
Darrell

Thanks for sharing your take on the expedition TS. Sounds like a lot of fun. I hope whomever it was that experienced the lights will be able to share their experience. That was a pretty intriguing subject last time it came up in an expedition report.

Ya, we can hope some people will speak up. But I think that this is going to be all that will be said on the Exp. Like I said before. I think a post would of already been put up a long time ago. Oh well.. I think people only posted on the private board.

OK Truth Seeker I see you have got the ball rolling. This is my post Expedition write up. Others have made statements too. Not sure why they haven't been transferred. This report is modified to remove names.

I arrived early Wed Morning with another investigator, I had done a Google earth search of the area and found what I believe would be the perfect spot. After pitching the tent we decided to look around the area. We found a wide spot on the side of the road and decided to pull over to investigate. We followed a logging road to a tank trapped spot. It was here we noticed a rather human like looking scat pile. We photographed the evidence and moved on.

Sxxx Mxxxx, from Grays Harbor, and I rolled into camp Wed morning. My plan was to camp above MBC (Main Base Camp). After doing a Google earth search I was attempting to place myself directly above the area where there were 3 day time sightings last year. Our camp was in a direct path on the up hill side. Later that night during our road walk I got the confirmation I was hoping to get. We heard a whoop that was in the same location as our tent. I knew then we would be in for an interesting trip. Later that night I set up my bionic ear and recorder inside my tent. I then directed it toward the treeline to our south where we had heard the whoop. We were rewarded about twelve minutes later with a LOUD WHOOP, which was answered by another one in close proximity followed by a wood knock. Very cool. Sxxxx Txxxxx also had his recorder going and got the same thing recorded. He also got an additional whoop that I did not record. Not sure why but his is loud and clear.

Thursday: Sxxxx reported finding a possible track way on an early morning walk. Later Kxxx Jxxx, Sxxxx, and I found the track way and examined it. Nothing unusual about the length of the steps walking a down hill slope. Impressions were a little on the wide side. Toes were not visible in the duff. We cast the best of the impressions just to see if it would reveal something of importance.

Later that morning upon arrival at MBC we began to hear stories about somebody waking in the middle of the night only to see a sasquatch at the open end of his truck bed. So excited that Dxxxx got the close encounter. What a story and life experience. . I would like to thank Dxxxx personally for letting me record his early morning sounds and vocals. I will post that to the board for every one to hear.

Later Thursday evening a group of us convened at Exxxx camp for a night walk. I had my recorder running the whole time. We were joined by a group of investigators and PEPPER doodle, the dog. While at Exxx camp, sitting around waiting to go for the road walk, I began to hear motion in the woods. Can't say it was squatch related other than hearing some wood taps. When we decided it was time to head out Dxxxx and I walked about 50 yards behind the group listening for sounds emanating from the woods. Not more than two minutes after departing camp I clearly heard an owl call. Dxxx and I stopped to record. Then the strangest thing happened. The owl calls started morphing into a dog bark. The sound was clear enough that our group ahead of us wanted to know about the dog barking. One of the calls you can hear the voice crack. That did not sound very owl like. Can't say what was going on but interesting to note.

During the road walk I heard a good wood knock and a whistle but that was about it for activity. Oh one important side bar. I saw the moon and made note of it nearing moon set. It was a crescent shape. At one point in the road walk we left the main road and went up a spur road that had a thick canopy of small alder. As we entered this road a group of people stopped to view a strange light to the south. There was quite a conversation about what it could possible be, Car headlights, other investigators. It was a bright white vertical light source and seemed to be moving yet in the same vicinity. After watching it for a few minutes I remembered the crescent moon setting I had seen about fifteen minutes prior. Bingo, strange white light solved.

Friday: Sxxx and I got to meet xxxxx, care taker at a local Resort. She was quite entertaining. We had to move our discussion outside, you could see our conversations were being monitored by the tourists. I wish I had my tape recorder going. She is convinced that these squatch are locals and know her. She is not all that thrilled about it but will not deny their existence.

Hung around MBC the better part of the afternoon listening to Dxxxx tell his fantastic story and hearing his subsequent recording. Met up with investigator Hxxxx & his brother. Convinced them that moving the R2D2 (thermal recording unit) up our way would be a good idea. While scouting the location we went for a brief walk down a spur logging road. I showed them the Scat that SXXXX and I found Wednesday. As we were walking back Rxxx said do you smell that??? Smells like a sewer. Why yes I did. We moved a little further down the road and wham, ran into the smell again. Odd thing was we were heading up wind. This seemed to seal the deal for Rxxx, so he and Jxxx set up camp at this site.

Later that evening we began to get periodic rain showers. I decided not to record the road walk. Somewhere around 11:00 Sxxxx and I ended up at Truth Seekers camp BS'ing with Rxxxx and Jxxxx. Truth Seeker had hit the hay and we could hear a snore every once in a while. Somewhere along the conversation Sxxxx said to Rxxxx. Mind if I look through your thermal device?? Rxxx gave the thermal to Sxxxx and wished him luck. It wasn't long before Sxxx said, I got something interesting I want you to look at. Sxxx handed the thermal to Rxxxx who promptly reported. Oh yes I see it, moving to the left. All I remember Sxxxx saying is YOUR KIDDING ME!!!!!. At some point Rxxxx surrenders the thermal to me after a constant barrage of LET ME SEE, LET ME SEE, like some five year old kid. Just a note for those that have not had the opportunity to use a thermal device, your eye takes approximately two minutes to adapt. More or less depending upon age. So all I saw was Grey, then slowly a tree or two would emerge out of the Grey fog. What ever Sxxx and Rixxx saw was long gone. Drat…. I kept at panning the treeline and then something caught my eye. It appeared to be a upright individual. It was not brighter than the surrounding trees therefore probably my eyes just playing tricks. I surrendered the thermal to Jxxx who had nothing further to report.

We went back to our camp chairs to share more true adventures, laughing and having a good time. Sxxx decided he wanted another turn with the thermal so he went back out to the road. After a while I wandered back out to join him. He had nothing to report and handed me the thermal. After a couple of minutes things began to come in focus. I decided for some reason to pan to the South. BINGO, huge and I mean HUGE white object came into view. Excitedly I reported, I got One. I started reporting what I was seeing. What I saw reminded me of the Don Young video. It was a head and shoulders bobbing and weaving, seemingly adjusting it's movements to mine. It looked like there could be two of them , the signature was so large. Then it seemed to rise above the brush. It was then I could see this wasn't two creatures but one enormous one. I could see a large oval head placed on immense shoulders. It looked like a football player wearing two sets of shoulder pads. I could only see the creature from the chest up. At this point I handed the thermal over to Jxxx for a look. He will have to describe what he saw. I believe we all got a look at it.

I convinced Rxxx that we needed to move the R2D2 recording unit into position. Rxxxx was hesitant because he knew that moving the thermal into position would make a loud gear noise as the unit rotated to the proper angle. I had the hand held thermal while Rxxx moved the R2D2 into position. I had a great bead on the creature. Just as if on cue when Rxxx began moving the thermal the Creature began to fade from sight. My heart sunk as I watched him wink out of view just prior to Rxxx asking, "Have I got the right alignment." Well yes you do, but it is gone now. Squatched again. How do they do that???

We sat back down and resumed our true tale's conversation. Again Sxxx borrowed the thermal and went back to the road to scan the surroundings. It wasn't long that he reported, he's back. When it was my turn to look through the thermal I saw a significantly smaller image. Ummm…. Rxxx began scanning in the direction we were seeing the creature. HE could not pick up the signature??? The only thing I can think of is the hand held thermal was at one angle and the R2D2 was at another. There were tree's in it's direct path to glimpsing the image. It wasn't until the following day that I figured out why the creature looked so small the second go around. What I didn't know at the time was that on the other side of the trees in our immediate view was a clear cut . The clear cut was on an upward slope. It is my belief that the second time we saw the squatch it was up on the hillside much further away from when we originally saw it. I still have not heard if anything was actually recorded.

What ever we were seeing Friday night seemed to make a re appearance for another group of investigators. When I saw the first picture that Gxxx sent us I knew exactly where he was. It also makes me rethink the large scat pile Sxxx and I found Wednesday upon our arrival to this location. I believe this is a good Spot, I know that Mxxx and Dxxx had activity at their camp about a 100 yards away. Looks like my Google earth research of the location paid off.

Later that night Sxxx and I retired to our camp. I set up the bionic ear and recorded the next event. I was listening through head phones while Sxxx was just laying awake. It wasn't long before I heard Crunch, Crunch, Crunch, Crunch of heavy footsteps. They sounded like they were crossing the road. Seems like we had visitors. It was quite exciting. We had movement all around us. Something loved the sound of ruffling the Blue Tarp I had over my table protecting the camp kitchen. Sxxx and I both saw large shadows pass by the tent. Something was at our campsite for the better part of a couple of hours. In the morning when I was getting out of the tent I noticed that the entry way partition was unzipped. My Cabela's tent has a vestibule awning that can be battened down. It provides a place to sit down and take off muddy clothing & shoes before entering the tent. I watched Sxxx zip that up before entering the tent. The next morning it was unzipped

Speaking of recordings. I do have some interesting sounds that I collected between road walks and all night tent recordings. I have over 30 hours to review. I will post clips as I get interesting sounds isolated . One sound I recorded is that of something attempting to open a car door. You can hear it pulling on the car door handle and letting go. I locked my car every evening. If I had not, Something would have investigated the inside of my car. It we were being observed during the day then it would have seen us pulling the handle to get in the car.

Saturday was a blur that included a nap, missed the Last get together at MBC. Just prior to my snooze I remember sitting in my camp chair around 4:30 in the afternoon. I was looking west into the trees when all of a sudden I heard a CRACK. I was on alert and began panning deeper into the trees. Suddenly a dark stump caught my attention. As I focused on the stump to the left there seemed to be the silhouette of a crested head and shoulder….. Nah…… that couldn't be what I think it is could it??? I stood up out of my chair hoping to provoke movement. I moved a little closer. Nothing... the object was not moving. OK I thought I will get my binoculars and see what this is close up. When I got my them in the right spot I was amazed to see light filtering through the leaves where just moments before was darkness and shadow. Chalk one up to the blob squatch.

Well that is about it for activity. I will have to speak with the moderators about posting the audio clips I have mentioned in the report.

Galahad,

Fascinating report. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Well done on the pre-expedition research in Google Earth. Glad that worked for you, and maybe others will be able to replicate your success in the future.

I for one am very interested in hearing your recordings (as are others here I'm sure), especially the whoops and the owl hoot/dog bark sounds. If you need a convenient place to share your recordings from, I highly recommend the free service at http://drop.io/
It's very easy to set up and share files up to 100 MB for free.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Hello All,
Let me first thank all the great people who ran this expo for this fun and exciting experience. This was my second WA state expo this year and both were very fun and outstanding!
I arrived at MBC on Tuesday and found a secluded tent spot off to the north in the woods. Nothing to report personaly my first night. But in camp that night a short distance away in a tent just west of the mess tent. I was told a camper and his dog were awakened in the night to sounds of movement in the grass in the area of the trees just behind their tent. The dog allerted and followed the sound as it moved from behind the tent to the south side of the tent. The dog stayed quiet and watched the side of the tent wall for some time I was told.
Our examination of the area in the daylight found a matted down grass area just on the side of the tent to the south and what I would describe as a body width snaking line of matted grass that led from under the very low bushes/trees at the edge of the forest. The opening that it looked like was used to gain access to our open camp area was only about 20inches high. There were 4 small reed like weeds growing in the small opening. They were about 15 inches tall and about the width of a pencil in diameter. These reeds were all broken over in the direction of the tent. All were broken over at about 4 inches off the gound. They all looked exactly the same. I found that very interesting. There was also a pungent odor in the matted down grass all the way in and very pronounced in the matted area south of the tent. The smell was animal like with urine and slight musk. Not very bad but noticable. Many people checked out the effected area throughout the day.

Another interesting thing happend the next morning we found a very human looking scat pile right in the center of the matted area by the tent. This WAS NOT there the day before.
Thursday I moved up to the west ridge powerline camp. This camp was very remote and about 8 miles from the highway. My first night there during a night road walk I felt our group was being followed. I had a parabolic dish and heard foot falls. I shared the dish with at least two others in our group and they heard it as well.
I think it was a night walk on friday when I felt I was zapped. I was at the back of the group a ways with my dish. I felt a chill go up my spine and then a thumping feeling at the base of the back of my head. It felt like someone was tapping the base of my head on each side over and over...very wierd and my first such experience.
Saturday night I set my tent up several hundred yards away from the small group camp we had. This was near Canada camp from the year before. I put my tent right in the middle of the powerline road. I was out of sight from the main group and separated by a couple of small hills. The area was clear with a steep up slope to the east and a more gradual down slope to the west. It was raining up until midnight or so. I went up to my tent alone at about 1am. It was foggy and damp but no rain. I closed up the tent's fly vestabule due to the rain. At 330am I woke up. I figured something must have woke me so I lay there with out moving and trying to breath like I was still asleep. The sky was bright enough through the clouds to allow a little light and I could see in the tent. It was bright enough to read my digital watch without light.
At 335am the tent was shaken by the very top ridge of the tent. It's a backpacking tent with the front being highter. It's as if it was grabbed at the top and shook from just the highest point of the tent. This was just over my head. I heard two deep breaths from the north side of the tent after the first shake. The tent was shaken 3 times total between 335 and 415am. I fell back to sleep only to be reawakened by more shaking at around 5am. This happened 2 more times. I was getting irritated at being bothered so i decided to do something..LOL. I gave a big grunt followed by a whistle. Then I heard footsteps moving away from the tent and down the slope to the west. At 6am I heard a whistle at normal volume to the west followed very shortly by a return whistle from the east (very human like). Both of these were slightly south of my tent. I opened the fly and looked that way as it was fully light then...nothing seen. NOTE: There was no wind of any kind that night.
During our cooking of breakfast at about 9am a very interesting encounter happened.....but that is for others to tell.
I met some great folks during my days in the Olympic's a great group of investigators!

Of humorous note. I was shopping at the tiny store a few miles from MBC. I was wearing my BFRO tee shirt. The owner of the store says to me..."Do you know there are groups of people with all kinds of fancy gear running around looking for the bigfoot?" I said really? He replyed that's crazy and there was no such thing and how he had lived here all his life. And that there was nothing to any of the story's.....
I thought about all the business we were bringing him all the while with him having no knowledge of our group.....Had he known he might have made up an interesting story or two! I'm sure he made several hundred "extra" bucks while we were there......cheers

bwomer - you said it was raining. Did you find any tracks around your tent??

Did this expo allow dogs?? I've always heard they were a deterrent when it comes to BF.

Great reports Truth-seeker, Galahad Whidby and bwomer...

DXXXX and I were camped between Truth-seeker and Galad on a pull-out section of the logging road. We arrived Wednesday about 10:30am and after checking in @ MBC we scouted the adjacent area's and decided on our spot. (Our camp was SSE of MBC, maybe 800-1000 ft. elev. gain) As soon as we started to unpack my truck we both noticed a fowl, dead smell. DXXXX and I investigated by doing a search of the area behind our tent's and behind my truck, but couldn't find the source of the stench! Funny, as there was very little wind if any at this time of day and the smell seemed to fade in-N-out as we looked around. Over the duration of the Expedition we both experienced this smell periodically.

After sitting up camp we decided to just chill and sort of look and listen to take in this magnificent area! Several time's over a couple hour period we both heard branch breaks within the Forest. The source wasn't determined and as I stated earlier very little wind. Something very Heavy was walking around scouting us out.

That evening we did a road walk by about 10-12 participants. Galad had his bionic ear and did hear a few strange sounds. After returning to our tents and retiring for the evening the wind picked-up. It came and went in little gust's in the tops of the tree's....making excellent fodder for some good sleep. Before I drifted off to sleep, DXXXX said from her tent do you hear that?? It sounded as if a Squatch was belly crawling closer to our tent's! As the wind blew, the creature would move closer using the wind as a mask of it's movement. I couldn't believe what I was hearing this close to my tent! The organizer's of this Expedition had commented that the Squatch in this area are not as vocal as they are in other area's of the country, but they are far more BOLDER! Hence my minds eye is picturing a 500# squatch belly crawling within feet of me for a better look see and nobody's even snoring yet! I feel as thou I could have reached out and touched it! I soon was fast asleep and never was disturbed the rest of the night.

Thursday morning was spent scouting a spur road off of the road we were camped on and pretty much resting up for the night ahead. We grouped up with about 15-20 people and decided to go south on the logging road and then up another spur road termed "spooky road". This particular road was very menacing and....spooky! I can probably assume correctly that out of those 20 people on that walk,90% of them wouldn't go up that road BY THEMSELVES IN THE PITCH BLACK NIGHT! Maybe I'm wrong?? Anyway about 50-75 yards up this road, we had to go code red! (Red lights ONLY) It's a good thing too or there could have been about 10 broken ankles! Exposed tree roots, and huge boulders littered the entire walk. After about another 1/2 mile the group came to a "T". 6-8 people including myself, broke off and went to the right while the rest of the group stayed at the "T". We returned a short time later as this trail hadn't been scouted in the daylight. When we arrived back at the "T" JXX said that his dog had alerted to the left of the T, which was a draw that dropped off below us into a huge stand of Doug Fir. Some he hawing went on because this trail hadn't been scouted either...(Scouting in daylight hours prevents mishaps when you can't see the end of your nose at night) Anyway a few NEW YOOORKAS said they were going and went with about 4 others. The rest of us stayed on this ridge. After they were gone 5-10 minutes at least 4 of us witnessed green eyeshine below us in the tree line. I personally saw two sets of eyeshine. The group down in the stand of trees did a few vocals, but no takers. After some time the group got back together and made their way back down spooky road with no further incidents.

Once back in my tent, I decided that I wanted to stay awake as long as possible. Within moments I heard branch breaks again (Wind was calm) and once in a while that crawling noise just like the night before. My camping partner was a female Native American who is very selective of what she eats and drinks, a very pure individual. She shared with me the message she was sending to the forest and primarily to biggie and I think they were drawn to her in a way. At about 3:15am I am still awake. My head is facing east. It is a cloudless night and by rolling my head back slightly, I'm able to look out my door flap and see endless stars..as I'm looking out my flap a small rectangular 2"x3" light energized on behind my rain-fly, it moved out 3-4" from my rain-fly, where it appeared brighter now, moved down 10-12 inches, moved back behind my rain-fly and extinguished! I remember sort of flinching for no reason except shock at what I just saw! Again, the sequence repeated itself, illuminating on moving out from the rain-fly, moving down 10-12 inches, going back behind the fly and going out. I kept my eyes looking where I last saw it. It came on one more time, moved out then this time moved up 10-12 inches

Before the light went out for the last time a statement was heard by me, thou no words were spoken. It just was in my ears! ( I will not reveal the statement) This whole incident took place in a span of 15 seconds..Maybe another 15 seconds goes by and all of a sudden my tent's north side has a HUGE shadow towering over it that hasn't been there all night...suddenly something else grabbed my blue tarp's outside covering my stove, that diversion worked because after looking in that direction, my eye's went back to where the shadow was and it was no longer there!! After a few more minutes I was out cold.

Friday was pretty uneventfull,in the evening we went up the road to visit Truth-seeker when suddenly it started to rain...that made my mind-up..back to my tent for some excellent shut-eye! At around 4:30am DXXXX wakes me when her flap zipper unzips,,nature call...nobody drinks more water then this girl! Once she reached her final spot,,I heard two powerfull growls behind our tent. I called out to DXXXX where are you, she replied over here behind your truck, Why? I said I'll tell you when your back in your tent. Before she started back there was one more growl, this time across the road from our tents..She didn't hear anything, after telling her what I heard she let out her own little growl!!!

Sat was pretty low keyed, however more and more people moved into our area for the last night because of all the action that was going on between gahlad and us and Truth-seeker. Later on about 10:00pm the mountain came alive with automobile and truck traffic. It was a bunch of kids off to find a spot to party. that's what I experienced. Excellent Expedition, Excellent company!

One little story that I would like to share as well. Thurs or Friday I forget which one, but I'm sitting in camp about noon when this ol' logger type pulls up in his p/u and turns off the engine..."what in the hell is going on around here"? he ask's me. I responded, oh just some nature lover's camping out. He said in the 30 years he had been hunting this area he had never came across more then maybe 1 other person. He again asked what we were doing there, I responded with a question of my own to him..."Ya ever see anything out here"? I asked. Without hesitation he looked me in the eyes and said "OH, There in here!! According to this Bear hunter who proclaimed his bear hunting dogs were the best in the area, he shared a story of a hunt once where his dogs came back to the truck without being called back. His dogs never did that, he said..one was still missing and he went looking for it, found it too..its face was gone...no teeth or claw marks, just something powerfull took off its face, but whatever it was that did it...didn't consume the animal...just left it!

Can't wait till 2010!!

monongahela,
It is with some reservation that I will post some audio files from the Olympic Penninsula Expedition. Not that I don't mind sharing but rather a healthy concern that sounds, are in the ear of the beholder.

1. I make no claim nor do I suggest that these files are soley from sasquatch or bigfoot. In all cases I never saw what made or produced the sounds recorded. So we are left with speculation. One person's opinion is as good as the next. Some folks are more authorities on the sounds of nature, I make no claims to be one of them.

2. I have no idea how each listener will review the audio files. I find that I have to review the files at full volume with earphones to get the most out of each file. I found that some files I needed to hear multiple times before I could distinguish the subtlties. So it boils down to how much patience and the quality of the equipment that is used to get the maximum out of each recording.

3. These files are snippets of all night recordings. I set up my bionic ear and recorder in my tent turn it on then monitor the sounds being recorded till I fall asleep. I found that sometimes I could last until 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning. Quite often I would have a pretty good idea of what was on the tape before I would review. Sometimes there were subtle sounds that I found doing my review.

4. Context, each of these sound files has more meaning than what is recorded. I went to this specific location because I researched the area. I had a very strong suspicion that I was in a good location for activity. I was able to see a thermal image of a of a hominid revealing immense head and shoulders. I recorded wood knocks, vocalizations, whistles, grunts and voices. So there exists a possibility that the sounds being posted are squatch related. However I fully realize that I can make no claim that they are.
So please understand that what ever opinion you have about the recordings are as valid as the next.

I personally enjoy recording. It helps me remember the trip. I record while I am out in the field and sleeping in my tent. It helps preserve the experience.

monongahela,Thank you for introducing me to drop.io I have down loaded a few of the files and will see how this works.

The first of the two files was recorded about 25 minutes after I had retired in my tent. It was about 1:30 am. We had been on a road walk. We heard whoops coming from the direction of my tent. The second file was about 30 minutes later.

Galahad, First of all, awesome recordings! Thanks for sharing!!
Just a thought regarding the child's sound....... I have asthma, and when someone is wheezing it produces a sound a little like that squeaky sound. Does it conicide with your tent mate's breathing or did you specifically hear it from outside the tent? Its hard to tell just from the recording.

Galahad,

First, I'd like to thank you for sharing your recordings. I understand that feeling of "going out on a limb" that can come with sharing something for consideration in the realm of "possible" sasquatch evidence. The biased and unwarranted bashing so often doled out by skeptics can put a real chill on the open dissemination of useful information for the thoughtful consideration of more moderate minds (can I get "tion" into that sentence any more?). I also appreciate the even handed moderation applied by the BFRO forum administrators that allows opposing views to be shared, as long as a modicum of respect is maintained in the debate. It's just this type of forum, with contributors such as yourself (and too many others to name here), that the sas research community (whether professional or amateur) needs to move this field of study forward.

Second, I think your caveats are well stated, and could probably serve as a draft platform on which all audio recordings could be shared (are you a lawyer, or contracts/legal specialist?). I couldn't find anything that didn't apply to my own recordings. For instance, while I have recorded wood knocks in the field, and shared them as possible sas evidence, I would never be able to purport that recording as proof of such. Nor would I want to open myself up to such an inquisition ...

I look forward to listening to your recordings this evening and hope to given them an in depth review over time. I also want to encourage anyone else out there who might have audio recordings from their efforts to research this subject to consider the BFRO forum as the right place to share such information. My experience here has been a good one, and this is a thoughtful crowd of intelligent folks with some great insight to share.

That was my gut reaction as well.. that it's a wheezing associated with the breathing. Actually I was thinking "it happens at the exact same time after every breath!" ... and then I realized the recording was looped.. haha.

But.. very interesting recordings overall! Thanks for sharing.

With the close knocks.. you can also hear a "swishing sound" after each strike.. as if something is hitting, then being dragged back up, and hitting again. Strange.

This was my first expedition, so I can say that I went with a very healthy bit of skepicism. I wasn't sure they existed, but I thought there could be something to this. There are just to many reports, by to many peolpe, over too long a period of time to simply discount all this as mass hysteria or misidentification. To simple discount it out of hand wouldn't be very scientific. So I went with an open mind. I flew in from New York with my brother and uncle to attend this expedition. Due to the fact that we flew, we rented an RV to stay in. We arrived at MBC on Wednesday morning, and met alot of great people there. MBC was only a small dirt area, so instead of trying to park the RV there we proceeded to explore the logging roads that went to the South. I don't know how we managed to get the RV to where we did, but we managed to get to the end of the Southern road which ended up in a large clearcut. We were actually as far away from MBC as you could get, in fact we had no radio contact due to the terrain and distance. Due to no radio contact we decided to stay at this location overnight and then try to find a closer location on Thursday. We were also much to far to walk back and forth to MBC, and the RV didn't make it easy to drive back and forth either. We proceeded to back the RV up as close to the treeline to the East as we could, and set up camp. Needless to say we were impossible to miss being a large RV parked all alone in the middle of the clearcut. We scouted the entire area around the clearcut that afternoon looking for any animal tracks, or scat, rubs, tree breaks, ...ect, that would indicate any large herbivores in the area. Of course we also looked for any human looking tracks as well. Needless to say we found nothing to suggest any large elk herd, or deer in the area at that time. Maybe others who were there could confirm this or refute it. After night fall we proceeded to do several wood knocks on an old hollowed out log that was left over by the loggers. This log seemed to be made for this as the hollow sound seemed to carry for quite a distance around us. I listened with my bionic ear for any response, but heard nothing. Same thing with several whoop calls. Shortly after 10 P.M. I was exiting the RV with my uncle. My brother had been sitting alone outside facing the treeline toward the back of the RV. He told us that only a minute or two before we came out of the RV that something was breaking large branches about 70-80 yards to the south just inside the treeline. That in itself is not unusual, it could have been any large animal, except that when my brother looked toward the sound with our night vision(Gen-3), the breaking stopped, and he could see nothing. As soon as he looked away the animal would break another large branch. This process repeated itself several times he said. I can't honestly say what it was because nothing was seen, but having been a hunter and outdoorsman all my life the behavior seems strange for several reasons. The weather was calm, no wind, so I don't think it was weather related. Another thing, if it was an Elk, deer, or bear it obviously knew we were there, and it wouldn't have cared that my brother was trying to look at it. Why did whatever it was stop whenever my brother turned to look that way? I can't say for sure what it was, but the behavior displayed was indeed strange. Whatever it was, it seemed cued into my brothers reactions. No further branch or tree breaking occured once all three of us were outside. The next event that happened still has me scratching my head to this day. Several hours after the prior event, I had walked a short distance away from my brother and uncle toward and slightly past the front of the RV to answer natures call. I was perhaps 60 feet away from them, facing a row of pine trees 20-30 yards away on the Northern edge of the clearcut. While I was standing there "occupied", I heard a womans voice start to speak to me from just inside those pine trees! I was so startled by this I didn't know what to do. I think my jaw must have hit the ground. I stood in my disbelief, straining, staring into these pines to see who, or what it was. I literally stood there motionless for several minutes. No movement, no further sounds, nothing. I will try to expain as best I can as to what I heard. As I stated before I've spent most of my life hunting, hiking, remote camping, and the like, and have heard alot of strange sounds in the woods over the years. Never have I heard anything like this, or even close to this. This was some form of speech, and I say that as a fact. Part of my professional training involved speech therapy, so I can state this with formal schooling to back me up. Humans have an innate ability to distinguish language. It is to some extent this ability that helps to define us as human. Another interesting observation was my immediate impression was "girl/woman/talking", not animal, not strange sound, not anything other than someone speaking to me from the darkness. It sounded like a young girls voice in tone. It was spoken at a regular volume, not yelled, not whispered. It had a structure to the sounds that indicated words, but almost like a mumbling quality to them. The word seemed to be strung together in a manner that was much quicker than english. It was a stream of words that lasted for about three seconds. I do not know what language it was. Those are the facts. I cannot explain what it was, as I saw nothing. I can tell you what it wasn't. Due to our position many miles from MBC, with no access to our location other than the one spur road that entered our clearcut, I know without a doubt that no human other than those present knew our location. We had not notified MBC of our location due to no radio contact, so no-one knew where we were. It would have been impossible for a car to have gotten close to us without us knowing. There were no houses, camps,or any other human activity around us for many miles. There is no way that a young human girl had bushwacked, at night, through some of the thickest terrain I've ever seen, many miles through those woods on the slim chance that perhaps someone would be at that clearcut, and she could startle them. It is incredulous for me to even believe that. Looking back now I should have said something back, but I was to stunned to do much of anything other than walk back to my brother and uncle beyond the rear of the RV. I proceeded to tell them, " Your going to think I'm crazy but a woman was just talking to me from the edge of those pines". At that my brother responded, and I quote, " sounded like a young girl mumbling, right?" I was shocked. My brother told me and my uncle that while we were in the RV about 15 minutes prior, and he was alone in his chair facing the Eastern treeline, that the girl had talked to him as well, and that it sounded like a young teenage girl! I asked him why didn't he say anything before, and he responded that he was so startled by the event that he brushed it off as impossible, so he hadn't said anything. This was an event that had several witnesses, and I have no good explaination for it. One other thing strange happened that night as well. We had brought some thermal motion detectors with us to use as a perimeter around our campsite at night. They work like a trip line. Anything passing in front of them will trigger a hand held sensor to indicate which sensor was triggered. We had positioned a unit on each corner of the RV when we went to bed. Each unit was placed about 6-7 feet up. Not more than 30 minutes after we went to bed the sensor on the front left side of the RV was triggered. I would like to state that these are expensive thermal units used for hunting, and they can only be triggered by the heat of an object passing in front of them. They cannot be triggered by the movement of branches...ect. I told my brother who was on that side of the RV that it was just triggered, and he should go outside and see what it is. I cannot repeat his response to this on a public forum. He did however try ot open the blind on his side to look out the window, but he proceeded to hit the blind and make a loud noise. We looked out, but whatever it was must have heard us and hit the deck. Nothing was standing there. I can only add that whatever tripped our sensor had to have been at least 6 feet tall. The only known animal in that area would have been an elk, and there is no doubt that we would have seen it clearly outside of the window. Again I cannot explain this. We should have stayed at that site for the expedition, but we moved on Thursday to be within walking distance of MBC so we could meet for the meetings, and such. Our new site was only about a mile or so further down the road past MBC, almost to a dead end. On Thursday night my uncle was feeling ill and stayed at the RV. I went with my brother to MBC to go on a road walk with a large group to and area that would come to be known as the spooky road. It really wasn't a road as such, as much as it was a narrow old spur road that was so overgrown that we all had to go code red, which means we had to use our red lights just so someone didn't get seriously injured on the hike. After proceeding down this road we came to a split, with a small trail proceeding down into a very steep and dark draw. There seemed to be something moving around us in the darkness. I heard movement and small twigs snap while we stood at the top of the draw. Several other people did too. There was a dog with us, I think it was called Pepper. I can say that this dog did seem on alert, although it remand quiet. One member of our group proceeded to do two whoops from this location down into the draw. Everyone remained quiet to listen for a response. I had my bionic ear pointed down into the draw when I absolutely heard a deep and drawn out single whoop respond from some distance down into this draw. My brother and I, as well as 4 other people proceeded down into this draw for about 1/2-3/4 mile to investigate. It was pitch black, steep, overgrown, and just generally not a place I would have liked to have run into anything. We did several calls while down this draw, but I must say nothing responded to us. Nothing further happended to me on that night. On Friday morning I took a walk with my brother from our RV down to the end of the dirt road to the dead end. I was actually recording and filming this walk, so it was interesting to review this when I got home. My brother was about 30 feet ahead of me and was the first to reach the dead end. He was standing on the edge, looking down into this incredibly thick undergrowth, when something very large crashed through the brush. Whatever it was had heard us approach the dead end, remained silent until my brother seemed to look right at it, then smashed through this brush like a freight train. Originally my brother was within 20 feet of it, and it crashed through about 20 more feet and then went silent. I have this all on film. I can add that when I reviewed this at home you can hear 4-5 thudding steps as this thing moved away. It sounds bipedal. One might ask how we didn't see it but we latter returned to the spot and the vegitation was so thick you literally couldn't see 3 feet into it. One other interesting thing happened during this event. Some people talk about getting Zapped. I don't really know what that is, however, upon review of my footage of this event I clearly started to become very dizzy while I was walking away from the dead end. I even comment about it on the tape, and I quote," Why am I so wobbly?" My balance was really off, but returned to normal after about 50-75 yards. I only mention this because this has never happened to me before on a hike, and I still don't know what happened. If this is what "zapping" is, then I got zapped. Nothing further happened the remainder of the trip, and in fact we left on Saturday morning because my uncle was still sick. In closing, I arrived an open minded skeptic and I left with more questions than I arrived with. Things happened on this trip which I did not expect. In fact I went home and immediately signed up for the New York expedition. If anyone reads the blog posted on the main page, My brother and I are "the brothers", who hiked to the top of the mountain during that expedition. Things happened there as well, but that is for another blog.

Galahad, I just finished my first listen through of all your recordings, including those on the drop.io website that you didn't link to from you post above. The one titled "Barking Chirping and very strange sounds 82709" is very interesting indeed. It has a mix of sounds in it that bear further attention.

One question, is there a highway within a few miles that contains truck traffic? I hear low frequency tones that might be mechanical in origin. I'd like to rule them out as traffic sounds if that's the case.

mark sharak - Wow! Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience and notes. That's just mind boggling to think about.. standing there taking a leak in the middle of nowhere and a girl starts talking to you!

Sounds like you had some great gear with you too. I definitely could've used the infrared "trip wires" on the 4 corners of my travel trailer on the Alberta X.

monongahela,

"First, I'd like to thank you for sharing your recordings."

Your welcome!!

"I also appreciate the even handed moderation applied by the BFRO forum administrators that allows opposing views to be shared, as long as a modicum of respect is maintained in the debate."

Yes, as a member of the BFRO I am familiar with the Moderators and what an excellent job they do to keep things on track. I have no problem sharing the information but did feel it necessary to explain that there is more to listening to an audio file. Issues of context and left out information should bring on a whole list of questions that I hope to answer adequately for all those interested.

"Second, I think your caveats are well stated, and could probably serve as a draft platform on which all audio recordings could be shared (are you a lawyer, or contracts/legal specialist?)."

Nope, no lawyers in this family. I just thought it would be wise to set the table so to speak. Photo's and audio files are part of the documentation process. You never know when that magically right moment will happen. So I thought it would be important to note my opinion of what has been recorded is just as valid as the next guy with one caveat. That caveat would be the level of detail one can get out of hearing the same audio file numerous times vs just listening to it once. I find that my opinion, of what I am hearing, can change depending on my depth of review.

"One question, is there a highway within a few miles that contains truck traffic? I hear low frequency tones that might be mechanical in origin. I'd like to rule them out as traffic sounds if that's the case."

Great Question, Yes there is. The road is 1 mile from where I was camped, according to Google earth. Now I heard all kinds of traffic on this road and I can go back and get a base line for you if you want.

The one titled "Barking Chirping and very strange sounds 82709" is very interesting indeed. It has a mix of sounds in it that bear further attention.

I believe there are several low guttural vocalizations on this clip. Neither of which I believe are mechanical. However don't let my opinion influence yours. Gotta tell you this one creeped me out a little. The canine like cackle that has some human element to it gave me visions of werewolves.

Great observations, there was another person in the tent. He is a smoker and he did wheeze at times. However, at first, I too thought there might be a correlation, but upon further review, have come up with a different answer. I believe that these sounds came from outside the tent. My reason for this will depend upon your equipment and at what volume you will allow yourself to review file WHERE'S MOMMY LOOP. First you will hear an exhale through the nose followed by something making a sound like the word mommy. Second, there is an ever so faint sound prior to the exhale that I will bet most will not hear, but I swear it sounds like WHERE's Mommy? Just a little to weird for me, so I would really like to go with an alternate explanation if you please.

The voices you talk about are interesting. The recordings of the sounds of a baby, or child is cool!!

Someone asked before...any kids on the trip??

There were childeren on this trip, but none as Mark Points out, in the profile of very young or small. Also these would have been recorded after 2:00am in the morning. It was just us and what ever was in the woods where the bionic ear was pointed.

No need for a baseline. Traffic sounds are pretty easy to rule out once you know they're there.

I too heard those low gutterals on my initial play through. And I was struck by how similar they were to the gutteral sounds I studied and described from he MRP recordings in this thread:
http://s2.excoboard.com/exco/thread...=2088590&page=4

Naturally I'll need to look a lot harder at that sounds in both recordings before drawing any stronger comparison, or differentiation.

Another question for you. What's the make and model of the recorder you were using?

I gave this recording a good run through with head phones on, the volume up, no filters applied, and the spectrogram rolling. There's more to this recording than would meet the casual observer's ear. I found there are basically two speakers. Speaker 1 is in the foreground causing the breathing sounds (inhales and exhales) and might actually be more than one person, but it's hard to differentiate simple breaths of air that lack vocal characteristics.

The second speaker is in the middle distant background (as indicated by signal strength) and vocalizes in what I'll characterize as a "mewling" voice, or as others have described previously, a child's voice. I counted the number of syllables uttered by the second speaker and came up with a total of nine in the short 14 second clip (before it begins to loop). The first two are before the first speaker's first exhale (or inhale, hard to tell which). They are very faint and the second of the two is somewhat stepped on by the start of the first speaker's breath. I've labeled those utterances #1 and #2 on the annotated spectrogram at:
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...feat=directlink

After the first speaker's first breath completes the second speaker emits three more sequential syllables. The #3 syllable is higher than the earlier two vocalizations, then the #4 syllable is lower than #1 or #2. Finally the #5 syllable is higher, but still lower than the earliest utterances on the recording.

Speaker 1 breathes again, including a loud exhale through the nose. Then speaker 2 utters syllables 6 & 7, more clearly than any of the earlier syllables. And finally syllables 8 and 9. These are the utterances that most clearly represent the words people seem to hear in the discussion above.

And now for a word about words...
I believe that audio analysis can be fraught with the same challenges that occur in image analysis. Specifically, the human mind when presented with information, either auditory or visual, will attempt to resolve that information into a pattern with which it is familiar or comfortable. And in the case of audio analysis, the harder you listen to something, the more likely your brain is to morph the signal in your ears into something you "think" you're hearing.

So just be cautious when you put the head phones on and don't "over-listen" what you're hearing. Sometimes the monkey's not saying Mommy.

That said, the possibility does exist that this could be an example of a clever mimicry. I posit that based upon the accumulating anecdotal evidence surrounding BF vocalizations mimicking other animals, reports of human voice mimicry, and the research of Mr. Scott Nelson which indicates distinct phonemes evident to his analysis of the Sierra Sounds CDs.

And if I were to allow speculation to run wild, I could conceive that this is a sasquatch attempting to lure the humans out of their tent by teasing them with the call of a human child, in the woods, at 2 a.m. But I'm not ready to go there, just yet.

You are a wise person.... I am 100 % in your camp of over listening. I understand how the mind maybe over sampling and creating a familiar bias, thus hearing an English word when it should just hear sounds. It's just so darn confounding to hear what sounds like a possible lost child in the woods. Creepy, Creepy, Creepy. I do like the path of analysis. Hopefully your break down will lead to more insights. Looking forward to that!!

Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone. I'm glad some of you chimed in and spoke up. As I knew I most likely would stick my foot in my mouth by trying to explain other peoples experiences. Kinda like I did when I said that the animal was behind a stump. As Galahad has pointed out it was small tree's and not a stump the animal was behind. See, I knew I'd screw it up somehow. Thanks for the correction Galahad. Thanks for posting the sounds. And Mike, thanks for retelling what the hunter told you. I was hoping you'd share that tid bit of info. You and I know there is more, but the BFRO don't there, and neither will we. Anyway, thanks again for sharing everyone. Excellent reports, sounds like you guys had yourselves a female pretty intersted in you Mark. Bet your mind is still going hmmmmm...?

Mono, WOW thanks for the analysis and information! We are so fortunate to have so many knowlegable people in the forum. It sure helps when we have questions and you are able to dispell some of the speculation!

Mark, Well she might have been commenting on what she saw... LOL. Or just ticked off that you guys were soiling her property. Either way, I imagine she could take any man in an arm wrestling contest. I sure wouldn't want to tick her off!! he he

As long as you didn't hear giggling, I think you're good.
To squatch, or not to squatch? That is the question.
