Okay Truth Seeker, here is my story. Three of us squatch hunters were using the thermal to watch... mice run back and forth by (not mine!), their tents. This was around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. The weather changed and had become quite foggy. My one cohort got out of his chair with the thermal and walked past the tents, asking me to bring the gen 3 I had been using. Because of the weather conditions, the gen had fogged up and was of no use. I did go stand by him along with our third person (fourth person was snoring away). The one with the thermal noticed something south of us and handed the therm over to the second person to confirm. He then had the pleasure of seeing a sasquatch stand up in the burm it had been squatting in. He caught the shoulders on up. I then looked through the therm. By this time, the sasquatch had squatted back down low. I saw the top of the head, while it weaved back and forth. Sadly, it soon lowered it self down and went off. Nothing more was seen or heard. Let me know guys if I missed anything or please add more if needed. Had too much fun as always. Met some great people which I hope to see on other expeditions.

I was the cohort that gave up the thermal. (Never do that)
trackrgrl pretty much nailed it. It was pretty unfortunate the way the fog moved in and made the gen 3 useless, because it wasn't long after the fog moved in that the thermal's batteries went dead. (Had we known that there were fresh batteries in a nearby tent, we could have checked for heat tracks at the subject's location... the sleeping cohort knew the battery location)
It was pretty cool listening to cohort #3's breathing become a heavy gasping mess as he realized what he was looking at. All I could do was watch his eyeball lit by the thermal screen get bigger and bigger....... "...can I have it back now?"

trackrgrl,

Welcome aboard. Could you do me a favor and go to the "Read this first" section on the forum home page, have a look through the posting guidelines and post your introduction?

Thanks

One of the hardest lessons to follow in squatching is NEVER TAKE THE THERMAL OFF THE SQUATCH!

There have been a number of cases in which a squatch has been seen through a thermal or a night vision scope, only to be lost when the viewer handed the instrument to another person, or took the instrument away from his eye in order to have a look with his naked eye.

If you want to keep the squatch in sight as long as possible don't take your eye off it! Tell your bystanders to go get another thermal or another night vision scope, or a camera, but DO NOT GIVE UP THE ONE YOU'RE USING! The information you may learn about squatch behavior is more valuable than satisfying your partner's desire to see the squatch. By the time your friend gets the thermal up to his eye, the squatch will probably be gone anyway. They seem to have an uncanny ability to melt away into the woods the moment the thermal is taken off them.

CharlesL,

I've often thought it would be a great thing if the Thermal imager could be interfaced to a digital video recorder with a small flip out screen. That way the folks not holding the imager would be able to see the action on the small screen, while simultaneously recording the action. This would satisfy the "let me see" urge of others nearby.

But lacking my own thermal imager, I've never bothered to investigate the video recorder interface options.

A thermal with a flip-out screen would be very handy!

But, personally, I'd rather see someone invent a thermal that doesn't cost sevaral thousand dollars. Then, we could ALL have one!

monongahela,
We do have something like that. When we are recording with a therm/DVR unit, several people can view the image at the same time.

Charles, don't worry, it's coming.

Jackalope, that's great. Can you describe the component parts that are put together in the system you're using?

monongahela, what I use is the x200p thermal imager coupled with the newest Vosonic DVR. The DVR is powered by an external lithium ion battery (good for about 12 hours) and the therm is powered by 2 AA lithiums (good for 6-7 hours). All of this is mounted on a ultra-lightweight rack that is extremely easy to carry and/or mount and is custom fabricated by one of our Wisconsin investigators.

Cool setup, thanks. I wasn't aware of the Vosonic DVRs, will have to look into them.
