I am not a professional athlete, certified trainer, etc. but I have had some success training and here is one cheap trick that has helped me, especially in longer runs.
When I first started running I used to get very tired in my shoulders and upper body. Even as I lost weight and got to a pretty thin frame this continued. As I really wanted to get more efficient on longer runs to complete my marathon, I knew I needed to develop these areas to carry the load and started doing push ups and I have never looked back. If I had the time and money I would probably go to the gym and hit the bench press but push ups have really worked for me and I can do them anytime and anywhere.
When I started out I was able to only pump out two set of 10 for 20 push ups. I am now in the 200 range each day in 3 sets.
Have fun! See you on the course!
