Posted November 30th, 2007 10:01 AM IP If you’re interested in making big improvements for the 2008 season then consider the following. Most folks in the northern hemisphere don’t rest or restore enough in the autumn. Often, they continue straight into logging what they consider base training in December and January. Relax, eat, and do something you enjoy besides triathlon. You don’t need to get fat, but now is the time to go out on your coffee shop ride, not bang out VO2max intervals.
So, what is base training anyway? For most people, it seems to be a theoretical banking of training miles, as if you actually withdraw at a later date. What type of training constitutes base training? Slow distance? High volume? These are two common myths. There is no “right” way, but there are lots of ineffectual ways. Below, Dr. Skiba and Terry talk about a smarter way to “Bank Training Stress."

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring. –Desmond Tutu
