On Feb 22, 2009 the PHOENIX TRIATHLON CLUB held their annual Desert Classic Duathlon consisting of a 3.5 mile trail run, 21 mile road bike course and 2.7 mile trail run. Winners of this event in the past few years have been big name such as Simon Whitfield (2007), Paul Tichelaar (2008) and Jim Vance (2006). This year the field was not as star studded but the calibre was still there as evident in the times posted.

One of my duathlete friends from Toronto had the chance to be in the area for the race so he put it into his race schedule in the fall and made this race his first Elite race after placing 2nd in the Canadian Age Group Finals in 2008. He placed 12th out of the pros but his time was solid enough to have only 5 age group athletes in the sold out field post better times.

A lot of triathletes use this race as their measuring stick for their training so you tri'ers will see some familiar names on the pro list including Chris Foster (winner) and Tim Deboom (10th), for example.

1 CHRIS FOSTER 1.23.48
2 JOZEPH MAJOR 1.25.23
3 JOSHUA MERRICK 1.25.47
4 LEWIS ELLIOTT 1.26.17
5 ARMAND VAN DER SMISSE 1.26.36
6 DAVID THOMPSON 1.27.09
7 DEREK YOREK 1.27.15
8 GREG REMALY 1.27.24
9 BENJAMIN HOFFMAN 1.28.37
10 DEBOOM TIM 1.29.41
11 JOHN PHILLIPS 1.30.22
12 BRUCE BIRD 1.32.35

His time would have posted a win in his usual Age Group Cat. of 40-44 with the winner coming in at 1:33:21. There were 33 athletes in that age group alone.

Congrats to Bruce for a great race in his first crack at the Elite level!

See you on the course!

That is actually a much weaker field than I've seen there for a few years. Not taking anything away from that awesome performance.

Sounds like it would be a fun race to do!

Victoria's is so hard to pass up. I didn't have it in my plan but I am having a hard time fighting the urge to race. Real fact is that I want to see where my bike is (the QR is still new to me, new Zipps, strength training, etc.) but that means I have to run as well. Might be a game time decision if the weather is better than last year.

Yeah, that would be interesting, but I am content to wait until Milton to see how the wheel (s hopefully soon) are.
