World Triathlon Corporation Announces Finish Line Policy

Posted: 11 Mar 2009 06:10 AM PDT

World Triathlon Corporation will implement a new finish line policy for all domestic Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events. Beginning with Ironman 70.3 California, friends and/or family members will no longer be permitted to cross the finish line or enter the finish chute with participating athletes.

See you on the course!

The insurance A#$%$#holes strike again! They have been fighting that one for a while. They have been making people sign a waiver beforehand lately. I figured this was happening soon.

I am sure something has happened in the past but you cannot beat the amazing site of the athlete bringing loved ones across the line with them after one of their most special events. I could see if the swim or bike was last, that could get dangerous. When I saw Craig Alexander have his daughter break the tape in Muskoka before him it showed a heck of a lot of class.

That's lame. I can understand the insurance aspect of it, but it's still lame.

My yonger brother lives in Kamloops with my dad, so when I did IMC in '98, they were there. It was about a million degrees that day(if Hawaii is hotter than that, I don't even want to know!) and they were there all day watching the race in that heat. So when I finally got to the finish line, my brother bolted under the sideline tape and ran down the shute with me. I'm sure that he'd seen a couple hundred other people do that same thing already and it seemed fine. I ordered the VHS tape afterwards and it's really nice to look back at him running in with me.(btw - I looked totally friggin' gassed on the tape!) ;]
