M2OGGTYFC No idea whats happening with Armes - I dont know if Tigers will need him as cover during the RWC, ditto with Forsyth. As for Duffey though... well, shouldnt be much longer if there's going to be an announcement... :D

MLS Very interested to see whether we genuinely push for promotion this season, by signing quality players to give us strength in depth (which is the only thing preventing us taking the final step imo) or just look to fill the holes with DR and Uni players like usual.

Obviously this relies quite heavily on finances unfortunately :( But the recent signing of Rupert Cooper is promising and shows we're widening the search for quality players, as I very much doubt his move had anything to do with Tigers :P

annie Last I'd heard about Kench was that he had not been offered a contract, which was about 2 weeks ago.

I quite liked him, but unfortunately only managed to attend 5 matches last season.

What were others opinions on him, who perhaps saw more of him?
May 30th, 2011 08:22 AM
Kirky I noticed Kench improved as the season progressed.Solid in the scrum and, later in the season, active in the loose. A player like him is an ideal member of a squad- maybe on the bench to replace tired/injured players without reducing quality and impact. If he continues to improve he will become invaluable.
It could be that his management company are just stalling as part of the "re-negotiations" that seem to have such pervasive influence nowadays. That could also be true of some of the others who have yet to sign. Luke, Joe Duffey etc?
May 30th, 2011 10:06 AM
MLS I've heard the reason Luke Sheriff hasn't been re-signed yet is possibly due to the fact he has a business set up somewhere near Derby and rugby isn't really his primary job, so he isn't likely to move anywhere and is therefore a low priority for re-signing... Nice theory.

Nope, I think its just Tigers being notoriously slow in announcing it in Duffey's case! Not that I have any idea whether he has actually signed yet but... ;)

annie Kirky - as MLS says, Luke's business is in the East Midlands. He is allowed to focus on that while maintaining his rugby committments with Nottingham. I have no doubt he could have played at a higher level than the Championship but he and his family are settled here. Resultantly, he's not going to be the 1st on your sign up list. I would be massively surprised if he weren't offered a contract for next season. Exactly the kind of seasoned pro/old head we need in the squad.

On another note, I read SB's interview in the Rugby Times. Interesting that he refers to Usasz and Sifa playing in the world cup as Nottingham players. Has Glenn finally been able to offer Tim a contract and Sifa signed up or is that a slip of the tongue?!

MLS There aren't many players of their calibre going spare so I'd be fairly suprised if we didnt sign them back on.

bleedsgreenanwhite Suppose this should be on the other thread but I thought there was a question over re-signing Sifa and Usasz because of the new rules about "foreign" players in matchday squads. Players from outside England, South Africa, Europe and the South Sea Islands ( I may be wrong about the specific locations) are going to be limited with the limits getting tighter over the next few years.
So with Socino coming in we are short of room going forward.
I might be wrong but I think that is the essence of what I heard. It might actually have been Annie who wrote it now that I think about it.
I sort of understand the idea of bringing English qualified players on but I'm not wholly convinced.
June 1st, 2011 08:00 AM
annie Sifa is down as a South Sea islander, so no problems there. That is the issue with Tim I believe though.

You don't want to go listening to me though! Always spouting rubbish :)
June 1st, 2011 08:30 AM
MLS Put this on the other thread as well...
'There are no new restriction on foreign players as such, but there are financial incentives available from the RFU if you average 14 English qualified players in your match day squad throughout the season.

So even if you had the minimum amount of 14, you can still have 9 non English qualified players in your squad. Obviously you could exceed this number a few times so long as you average 14 English qualified players in the match day squad throughout the season.

Do we even have more than 9 non English qualified players?
Usasz, Sifa, Kalamafoni, Socino, Arlidge...'

This is how I understand it, with the numbers raising to 16 EQ payers over the next 2 seasons. However if there is an issue with the re-signing of Tim then maybe there is more to it.
June 1st, 2011 08:33 AM
bleedsgreenanwhite So he is qualified to play for USA but down as a South Sea Islander?

MLS reckons we are both spouting rubbish anyway.

I think I did read it somewhere other than on here as well though. I think it said that the quota would be reduced by one player per year for the next three years. I wish I could remember where I read it.

Personally I hope we can find a way to keep them both.

Socino should be added to that list MLS.

Not at all, that's just the only change I had heard reported in regards to having non EQP's in your squad.

Sifa was born in American Samoa, but I assume he has some Pacific Island ancestry which enables him to count as a Pacific Islander instead of an American.

Kind of in the same way Craig Hammond no longer counts as a Kiwi due to him holding a British passport... I think
June 1st, 2011 09:14 AM
annie BG&W - Yes, I believe that is the case RE: Sifa. And, yes MLS you are right about Craig.

Now, as I understand it you are only able to have 3 foreign players in a match day squad. I do not think, though someone please correct me if I am wrong, there is a restriction on how many you can have in your squad as a whole. Obviously you wouldn't want hundreds based on the number permitted in a 22.

What counts as a foreign player is, as one might expect as the RFU is involved, farcical. Players hailing from the UK, Europe, South Africa or the South Sea islands do not count as 'foreign'.

I had heard someone mention that Socino has an Italian passport so doesn't count though I had indulged in a Magners or two at the time so can't be sure of my ground here.

I believe we have a problem RE: Usasz in terms of the number of foreigners in the squad but I can't put my finger on who they all are. Obviously Arlidge is NZ and Tim is AUS/USA but if it is true about Socino, then there's a spare place. Maybe GD has his eye on some more foreign players which would top the total?

June 1st, 2011 09:18 AM
bleedsgreenanwhite Blimey! This is making my head hurt.

If thats the case they'd have to be pretty good if we were to sacrifice our first choice scrum half for them...

Joe Duffy has both Irish and English ancestry doesnt he? So that shouldnt be an isse when/if he arrives.

Seems odd tbh...

hillbilly I like to think we could get a better 9 than Usaz. Hasn't been as good since his injury.

I do tend to agree with you, his basics are a bit off but he rarely takes a bad decision imo. A valuable ability to have for a 9.

There are certainly a few good 9's out there, Bristol alone have released Bolt, Alford and Shaw who are proven and quality Championship 9's.

Saying that I think Usasz is ahead of the latter in the USA pecking order...

David Bowden Tim is a quality player, but really excels when the pack is going forward. This season, with a pack that has spent much of its time retreating he has not had any space to play in. It will be interesting to see how he plays this weekend.
I wonder if we have any new signings, the website seems to have stopped updates on 26th May - Tigers season is now over so maybe there might be some news around?
June 2nd, 2011 06:06 AM
MLS Yes I was wondering when we would have any new updates. I understand the logic of drip feeding info, but we seemed to announce a flurry of signing early to mid April and its dried up a bit since.

By now most clubs have at least announced who will be leaving, we still have no idea about the following;

Props: Davies/Buxton/Fowkes
Hookers: Youngs/Philpott/Farrel/Taylor/Rostron
Locks: Kench/Carter/Todd
Back Row: Sherriff/Armstrong/Shaw
Scrumhalf: Usasz
Fly-half:
Centres: Johnston/Sifa/Bradford
Back 3: Barnard/Blake

I know we don't usually seem to announce our departures and I often find names of players cropping up that I recognise (Charlie Hayter at Stourbridge and Ash Elphinston at Jersey for instance) but it would be nice to hear something to keep the interest up and keep us guessing about who could be coming in...
June 2nd, 2011 06:25 AM
annie Geoff has now left and as far as I am aware has not (yet?) been replaced so there is no-one dedicated to update the website.
June 2nd, 2011 06:27 AM
beak Not a bean for a week, maybe something big is brewing! Tomorrow maybe!
June 2nd, 2011 07:44 AM
bleedsgreenanwhite Just been looking at the Tigers boards and they are talking in pretty certain terms of Tom Youngs being very much a Tigers player next season.
June 2nd, 2011 11:23 AM
annie And we might actually have a hooker! Yippee! And if the world's worst kept secret about Joe Duffy's return is indeed that rather than rumour, even better!
June 2nd, 2011 11:43 AM
David Bowden Hello club, any news? "Taps on screen" Anyone there?
God I hate being a mushroom.
Can we have some news on players, pre-season games, any upcoming events, anything really?
The off-season really does get dull fast. Haven't seen a live rugby match for....oh 6 days. What will it be like by August?
June 2nd, 2011 12:53 PM
M2OGGTYFC Oh god this Youngsy-Duffey swap rumour is gettin beyond a joke now!! Still, its Tigers dragging their feet. But I think the tigers forum are rite, am pretty confident Youngsy will be back at Tigers in the new season. Said it before- thats all im going to say..
June 2nd, 2011 03:56 PM
Brian Banter Just read a rumour that Finlay Barnham has been loaned out to Jersey for the start of next season due to being 5th(!!) in the scrum half order at Meadow Lane, so expect announcements on 4 scrum halfs in the coming week!

Te Ao Hou A post on this thread asked about how Nuneaton fans feel about having Nottingham Academy players on loan, or dual reg'd to them.

The following is from the Nun's fans forum -

'I don't know if this is true, but are all the lads that are from Nottingham going back there next season? Such as Cook, Mather, Barnard, Taylor? I certainly think three of those have been key to us staying up... I think if we can keep hold of most of these players and perhaps get a few more lads from Nottingham or Coventry we can really challenge next season? I think we have massive potential next season if we can make some shrewd signings and keep the players we have. However if we lose the Nottingham contingent, Mike (Umaga - DoR) and perhaps Chapman (10) who surely must be looking at playing higher we could be looking at another relegation battle.'

I think that is quite clear how the Nun's fan who wrote this feels.
