Graham Bennison Friday 24th, June. Ship Inn Shell Bay Sandy Slither (6.1 miles).

NB improved version !!!

Nightmare Series ‘Prince of Darkness’ Chris Russell came into the lime-light at last retaining his Sandy Slither title following a winter of discontent.
The Fife AC runner showed no signs of his winter injury blues as he stormed away from the Robinson Crusoe village of Lower Largo to leave the chasing pack marooned across the opening 2.5 miles stretch across Largo Bay. The grey skies departed as the field dipped into the Cocklemill Burn and following the 3 mile point at Shell Bay the views from Kincraig Head were truly stunning.
Russell sped on across Earlsferry Links and Chapel Green to commence the final mile over Elie beach with a 60 seconds lead. Unpressed a finishing time of 36 minutes 52 seconds saw Russell reach the Ship Inn sixty-nine seconds clear ahead of club colleagues Hugh McKay (38.01) with Neil Young in third (38.22). The race marked a new frontier for McKay who having reached the venerable age of 45 is not noted for contesting the ‘sillier scenic’ races on the club calendar – true enlightenment comes to us all eventually !!
Trudi Thomson (Pitreavie) placed 24th overall in 43 minutes 26 seconds and with a part-time residence in Lower Largo can now be considered a part-time local. With Trudi first woman Jocelyn Scott duly obliged as second female, first over 50, and chief raffle-ticket seller as Jocelyn and Cathy Sinclair raised sponsorship money for their forthcoming Corrieyairick Challenge.
With burgers on sale at the Ship Inn beer-garden and the sea and sky covered in a glorious pink wash the sun set on a truly remarkable event.

Suggie McKay - a venerable 2nd !

Isn’t hand timing a wonderful thing !!.
Also to come - spectacular photo coverage - this means you need spectacles to see the runners in the photos. Is that true Sarah ?

Twiggy credit where credit is due, it was actually quite a race.... After having an unexpected lead for the first mile, I was caught up by Hugh Mckay and Neil Young. Then true battle commenced across the myriad of sand traps and slithery slime. Continually swapping places Mckay and myself crossed the 3 mile marker together with Young close behind and it was only as the cliff tops approached that i took a decisive lead. it was only decisive as Mckay evidently valued his appendages more than I, while he sensibly navigated his way along the narrow pathways and down the steps to the golf course, I screamed along the paths and hurtled down the steps in great bounds of idiocy to open up a healthy lead. From then on I ran like a scared rabbit to the finish.

as ever it was a wonderful route and thanks to all who helped out on the night.

fifeac
Highlight of the night had to be when Alastair Robertson collided with Tom Scott's fruit pavlova. Alastair ended up covered in fresh cream and lacerations from the alleged meringue which must have been made from artex!

P.P.S. What about those MONSTER CAKES? - to die for!!!

:clap:Well done to Stecky Saurus and his merry band of volunteers - another Fife AC classic!

Graham Bennison 2 wonderful new piccies added. When are we going to have a photo of the month competition ???
June 27th, 2005 09:51 AM
SarahC So all of you who moaned and groaned as I stuck my camera phone in your face after dueling with the sledgey bottomed burn..will be pleased to know that my pictures consist of a very distant shot of the first three, Doug Gunstones backside and Graham Bennisons elbow! There seems to be a delay on the camera so you get the picture precisely 3seconds after taking it, ie I have lots of the ground! Sorry for all you battle hardened runners who were looking forward to a souvenir..or proof.. of your accomplishment! :ashamed:

personally I'm glad there are no photo's to show the ignominy of me falling in the burn.

in the water )
ps. do I have to hold on to the clipping of Tom & Jocelyn from the Dundee Courier or was it in the Fife edition too?

Graham Bennison PPS The photo of Tom & Jocelyn was in the Fife edition of the Courier. But, do hang on to it and get the photo reverently framed to adorn your mantlepiece ! You could even (at a moderate cost) have it signed !
