I'm gonna post a picture each week and try to explain the story behind the picture.

to start this thread, what could be better that the famous Drug Bust Story picture that Steve Poltz posted on poltz.com a few months ago :

for any of you who attended at least one Jewel concert, you've probably heard her telling the story before singing You Were Meant For Me.

back in 1995, Jewel and Steve Poltz went to Mexico on a songwriting trip (when they wrote YWMFM).

they somehow ended up on a boat with federalies to go whale watching and while on the boat, they discover that the federalies are actually on a drug bust !! in the end, when the drug smugglers are arrested, Steve helps the federalies to carry on the pot while Jewel thinks this is a set-up !!

and that's when the picture was taken, because as Jewel said "I tought, this is a Kodak Moment! This is something you share with your friends and loved ones"

you can read an extended version of the Drug Bust Story here.

That picture was taken on May 20, 2002 during the famous open-air festival Pinkpop, in the Netherlands. Jewel was playing there for the second time of her career.

She's pictured here with her guitarist from the This Way Tour, Stuart Mathis. Both of them were injured at the time : Jewel was thrown from a horse a month or so before and broke her collarbone and a rib, while Stuart broke his leg when he went skiing on a day off during the tour !

I remember that date well, because Jewel was playing Pinkpop in the afternoon, and she was supposed to play in Paris in the evening. But because of her accident, she had to cancel a few dates.
It was obvious she wouldn't be able to play 2 concerts on the same day, but we were hoping she would come to Paris...but nope...Pinkpop was maintained and Paris cancelled....and I had to return my front row tickets

I don't really blame her though : it must be lovely to play in front of an audience where everyone is wearing such a cute pink hat !!

That picture was part of the 2003 Holiday Campaign ran by VH1 and Saks Fifth Avenue to help raising funds for VH1's Save the Music.

Luxury retailers (like Estee Lauder, Coach, Dior, Longchamp, Hugo Boss, Moschino...) created exclusive products that were sold in VH1 Save the Music boutiques in Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

The Saks Fifth Avenue catalog featured pictures of artists (including Jewel, Beyonce, BB King, Sheryl Crow, Gloria Estefan...) wearing and holding the fundraising items. The catalog was mailed to Saks customers in October 2003.

In that picture, Jewel is wearing a Christian Dior top and holding a J'adore Dior bag with her dog, George in it

That picture of Jewel and Beyonce's bottom is from the VH1 Diva Duets show that took place on May 22, 2003 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Queen Latifah hosted the evening, with performances by Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Lisa Marie Presley, Mary J. Blige, Ashanti, Shania Twain, Chaka Khan and of course Jewel and Beyonce.

Jewel and Beyonce paid a tribute to Tina Turner by singing Proud Mary. It was the first time we've seen Jewel dance like this, she said in an interview that Beyonce taught her to dance for that performance.
She did pretty good, of course she didn't look as comfortable as Beyonce, but hey I'd like to see Beyonce do a solo acoustic show with just a guitar

Later on the show, Jewel performed Intuition. And at the end, Stevie Wonder came onstage and sang a medley of his songs with each of the divas, he sang You Are the Sunshine of My Life with Jewel. She looked very shy while singing with him, when she get on stage near him, she said it was like a dream come true.

For the record, our very own Mike was in the audience that night, let's hope for him, he had an angle as nice as that photographer's

This is the famous lollipop picture !!!

On July 18 & 19 1996, Jewel gave two concerts in Bearsville, NY, as a thank you gift for the members of the Everyday Angels mailing list. Those concerts are now famously known as Jewelstock.

Just before playing Fat Boy (it was called Fragile Flame at the time), Jewel is about to tell the story of the little boy she wrote the song for, and she goes "you guys probably know the story, you probably know everything I've eaten in the last month...I'm gonna tell it anyway".

And she talks about how she went online once using a friend's computer, and read the mailing list and how her favorite discussion was the cigarette discussion and then she shouts "IT WAS A LOLLIPOP" !!!!!!!!!!!

The "does Jewel smoke" debate appeared on the EDA list after that picture was posted on the internet and it was quite a recurring question back in early 1996.

And that "it was a lollipop" disclaimer became one of Jewel's famous quotes, in the same way more recent words such as "shit happens" did.

That picture was taken on June 16, 2003, in front of one the FYE Store in NYC. Jewel was there for a CD signing, it was a few weeks after the release of 0304 (obviously, with a pinky dress like this she could only promote 0304 !!!!).

I was somewhere in the line waiting behind her

The signing was supposed to start at noon. We went there at about 9.30 am, about 20 or more people were already waiting. About 30 minutes before Jewel's arrival, a guy from the store gave each one of us a post-it note to write our name on it. I guess they were afraid we would forget our name when meeting Jewel

They first told us she would sign one CD per person , then they told us she would sign as many CDs as we wanted but that she would only sign CDs and nothing else (but in the end, she signed everything we wanted).

At noon sharp, a limo parked in front of the store and Jewel came out of it

When they finally let us in, everything went really fast, security was everywhere : someone was like pushing you saying "stand there and wait", someone was taking your camera saying "Ill take the picture for you when she'll sign your CD", there was almost someone taking your CD and giving it to Jewel for her to sign. We didn't have time to say anything to her !!!

When I went out of the store, I saw that the line was moving real fast, so I decided to wait in line again. It was almost my turn when that security guy said "but your CD is already signed". I told him, I just wanted to talk to her and I moved forward before he could tell me anything else.
I said Jewel I had nothing else for her to sign, but I wanted to say Hi from the French Fans. She smiled and said she would be in Paris the next fall (well it's been 3 years and we're still waiting for her to come !!!).

At 1.15 pm the signing was over, altough it was supposed to last until 2 pm. Jewel was clearly not as popular as she was a few years ago. I remember a friend of mine was in NY when she did a CD signing for Spirit and there were so many people waiting, she couldn't sign everyone's CD !!!

Maybe it was the pink dress that scared people away.

That picture was taken in Amsterdam on February 28 2002, by yours truly. It was my fourth Jewel show but my first time meeting her.

In the afternoon before the show, I was waiting outside the venue with François, another french fan. There were only the two of us there, it was quite early, about 3.30 pm.

Jewel's band arrived shortly thereafter. Another 30 minutes went by and a black car parked right in front of us and Jewel came out along with her manager.

She was very friendly, she signed a couple of CDs/books for each of us and she posed for a picture.

There was a time when Jewel was playing a real part in a tv show, and not just herself singing her latest single in The Young & the Restless or 7th Heaven. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled after only 6 episodes.

The Lyon's Den was a NBC show, with Rob Lowe starring as a lawyer (Jack Turner). Jewel appeared in the last episode that was aired on Novembre 30, 2003.

In that episode :
"Jack client is a FBI agent accused of leaking information to a foreign government. The case turns out to be harder than expected when Jack finds out that his ex-fiancEis the prosecutor."

Of course Jewel is playing Rob Lowe's ex-fiance !!!

She was supposed to appear in 3 episodes, but only one episode was shot : was it due to the poor ratings of the first episodes ?? maybe...

but rumor has it, she and Rob Lowe didn't get along on the set...

That picture was taken on August 19th, 2001, during a show at Humphrey's by the Bay in San Diego, CA.

Early in the show, someone requested Kiss the Flame, Jewel said she wouldn't remember the lyrics, so she asked someone to go up on stage and help her !!!

She picked that blonde girl, who kinda looks like her, I think. Jewel told her to stand behind her and whisper the lyrics in her ear.

The whole performance is so funny !!!!!!!!!!

It's avalaible in the DVD, Jewel Live at Humphrey's By the Bay

This is a picture of Jewel and Sarah McLachlan taken during a press conference for Lilith Fair on July 5th, 1997.

That picture was taken on February 28th 2002 in Amsterdam at the Koninklijk Theater Carré.

The night before the concert, The Edison Awards (the Dutch Grammy Awards) took place in Amsterdam, among the performers were Jewel with Standing Still and Shakira with Whenever Wherever.

During her concert at the Carré, Jewel shared a funny little story with the audience :

"I was at the Awards show last night and Shakira was there, do you guys know Shakira ? [audience cheering]... I saw her in the hallway, it was just me and her, no security guards...so I grabbed her...and I punched her...she laid on the floor unconscious...I leaned over her...and I took her pants off, and I stole them"

That's why the bootleg of this show is known as Live in Shakira pants.

This is a picture of Jewel with Alan "Mr BB" Bershaw and his wife AmyJo, it was taken at Jewel stock in July 1996.

Mr BB is a New England sound engineer primarily responsible for Jewel's recording archive management. He relays news, information, via Jewel's official website or the EDA mailing list. He's keeping track of every Jewel's setlist.

Mr BB can often be seen at Jewel shows, especially on the East Coast since that's where he lives, and when he's there, you can be sure that the show is taped !!!

He really likes to meet EDAs/Jewel fans, so if you see him, say hello !!! This photo might be 10 years old but he hasn't really changed.

That picture was taken on February 26th, 1997 at the Grammy Awards. Jewel was wearing the now famous see-through dress.
She didn't win any Grammy that night, altough she was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She presented one Award with Kevin Spacey.

When asked why she had chosen to wear that Gianfranco Ferre dress, she explained :

Quote:
I'd stayed at the Royalton Hotel in New York, where the rooms are very dark, I tried the dress on in my room and had no way of knowing it was see-through! I assumed everybody thought I was gorgeous and wanted to take my photograph. I had no idea that the pervs were going to get a nipple shot...

That picture was taken during a photoshoot for the January 2003 issue of the magazine Self. That one is not the picture they used for the article, but it's a favorite of mine.

Self had a "I love my body" feature and Jewel explained :

Quote:
Years ago I was controlling about what I ate. I'd starve, I'd binge. It wasn't healthy. But I resisted the impulse to get plastic surgery. I hate seeing young girls go under the knife - it's such a trend, and I feel my industry is largely responsible.
People get ribs removed and they don't let kids know that's why they look so skinny.
Now I try really hard to listen to my body, to see what I need to be healthy.

In 1999, Jewel performed for President and Mrs Clinton as part of the annual Christmas in Washington charity concert assisting the Children's National Health Center. The other performers were B.B. King, Chris Isaak, Christina Aguilera and 98 Degrees.

The concert took place at the National Gallery in D.C., it was aired on December 12th 1999 on TNT.

This is a picture of Jewel and her mom Lenedra Carroll, a.k.a. Nedra.

Nedra was Jewel's manager from the beginning of her career until 2003.
She appears on two Jewel's records :
On Spirit, she sings This Little Bird, a lullaby song she used to sing to Jewel when she was a kid.
On Joy : A Holiday Collection, she sings Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reeinder and Face of Love with Jewel.

Rudolph seems to be a favorite of the mother and daughter, they sang it together quite a few times on television, actually they like the song so much that they even performed it on Vh1 Hard Rock Live, which was aired at the end of March !!

Check out Nedra's website for a complete biography :

This is a picture of Jewel signing autographs to her fans after a show.

Let me tell you about my experiences at Jewel shows :

When I was attending my first Jewel shows, I always brought with me a few CD booklets, books or J-Cards, but she never stopped after the show to sign stuffs.

The first time I met her, at my fifth show, I had only two things with me and she signed both of them before the
show.

A few months later, when she had just had that horse accident, about 10 to 15 fans were waiting for her after a show in Brussels, and someone from her crew came out and kindly asked us to leave because she couldn't sign anything because of her injuries, but he gave us signed pics she signed backstage, or so he said.

At another show in Lowell, MA, I had with me only one CD booklet, and she signed it during the concert while she was singing Chime Bells. After the show, she stayed out pretty long to sign stuff for everyone waiting for her. But I had nothing left for her to sign !!

This is a picture of Jewel directed by Ang Lee on the set of Ride with the Devil.

Jewel had a few acting experiences recently on different TV shows, but the part of Sue Lee Shelley in Ride With the Devil is her first and, to this day, only part in a movie.

In that civil war drama, Jewel played the lead female character, love interest of Skeet Ulrich and Tobey Maguire.

Unfortunately for Jewel, RWTD was one of Ang Lee's less successful movie.

Everyone in the land of Kilcheria knows that Jewel has a new single out : Quest for Love.

She wrote the song for the movie Arthur and the Invisibles. The movie opened on January 12th in the United States. Jewel was at the premiere in New York City a few days ago along with some members of the cast. Unfortunately, Madonna who's lending her voice to the character of Princess Selena, was not there ; she's been promoting the movie on her own.

On that picture, from left to right :
Jimmy Fallon, the voice of animated character Betameche, Mia Farrow who's playing Arthur's grandma, Freddie Highmore who's playing Arthur (yes, he's the kid from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory !!), our Jewelie girl, Luc Besson, french director (who also wrote the book on which his movie is based), Penny Balfour, who's playing Arthur's mother, and I don't know who the two other guys are.

But I'm still wondering if Jewel and Madonna ever met...

This is a picture of Jewel and her best friend Jacqueline Snyder, who died of cancer a few years ago. Jewel wrote Violet Eyes for Jacque.

Jewel talks about Jacque in her book Chasing Down the Dawn :

"I loved Jacque. As much as I loved my own mother. More sometimes than I loved myself. She was constant and kind and wise and always there. I depended on her to explain things to me, such as life and hurt and what I could do better and how I could be more helpful to others. Her life was dedicated to service. To the aid of others. And she had done so much. She was dedicated to helping indigenous people around the world improve living conditions. She worked to integrate their wisdom into modern cultures. She encouraged religious leaders of many nations and theologies to be more tolerant and to see the ultimate unity of all spiritual disciplines. She helped and loved me so much."

I just want to share with all of you my absolute favorite picture of Jewel.

This is a picture from the photoshoot for This Way, but it was not used in the CD booklet.

I especially like the look in her eyes in that one.

I like using this picture as a wallpaper on my computer from time to time.

This is a picture of Jewel and Ty's living room in their Stephenville, TX ranch. It was published in the June 2006 issue of In Style magazine.

About this room, Jewel says "I don't want things to look too heavy or dark. I think warm colors, like gold and beige make a room cozy.".

This picture of Jewel and Ty was taken during the Standing Still video shoot in Agua Dulce, CA in August 2001.

Jewel and Ty Murray, King of the Cowboys, met in 1999 in Denver ; a mutual friend introduced them when Ty was in town for a rodeo and Jewel for a concert.
Ty said "We didn't start dating immediately. About six or eight months later, she called and we talked on the phone. We hit it off. We have a lot of the same interests."

Here's an interesting story Ty shared with Jewel fans in the book Revealing Jewel :

Quote:

I had a couple days off that I had planned to go on a camping trip with this ol' guy that's a friend of mine from California. We were going to go up into the Sierra Nevadas and camp and fish, and we were going to pack in there on horseback. I had already kind of had that planned with him for a while. So Jewel and I were wanting to see each other, and I didn't have any days off other than that. I said to her, "Well, I'm going on a fishing trip up into the moutains with this friend of mine. He's a really cool guy. You want to go?" And she said "Sure".

I didn't know anything about her background, where she was raised, and I wasn't real sure about taking her, you know. We were on horses, and we were going to ride up into those mountains and sleep on the ground and fish, cook on the campfire and all this.

I joked with Pat -the guy I was going up there with- I said "I'm going to take this girl I met. I don't know how well she's going to do, but I told her what we're going to do and she said she'd like to go".
He said "Well, we'll see what she's made of". Anyway, we took her and she got along real good. I didn't know if she had ever been on a horse.

The funny part of the story is, later on, when I went with her to Alaska and saw where she was raised, and saw the cabin she grew up in and all that, I felt it was pretty funny thinking she might not be able to handle that camping trip.

I guess this is definitely the image of the week, it was posted during the past few days on various celebrity websites with comments such as Jewel's not the only one who's hungry or Jewel gives new meaning to a "happy meal".

That picture was taken in August 2003 on the set of The Terry and Gaby Show (a UK daytime TV show) while Jewel was promoting 0304 in London.

The show began with an interview, Jewel talked about the Intuition video, her influences, acting, Ty...

She sang a little bit of 2 Become 1 with a guitar some girl in the audience had brought in to be signed by Jewel and the production team had borrowed it off her for Jewel to use. The host also made Jewel yodel.

After that, there was a cookery feature. Jewel and a lady from the audience got to taste veal, roast piglet and foie gras and comment on them.

That picture was taken on March 18, 2003 in Hollywood for the General Motors Annual Fashion Show. Jewel was modeling along with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Biel.

To celebrate and highlight the rich heritage of film in Hollywood, GM's ten brought to life film's history through a visual display of past iconic Award winners accompanied by associations with trend-setting elements from each respective era, including fashion, music and automobiles.

Other celebrities modeling were Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, Adrian Brody, David Arquette.

That hair-do was part of the Dumbest Hairstyle Competition set up by the ASPCJ.

That picture is for those of you who have never been to a Jewel show or for those who miss going to a Jewel show.

When you see Jewel live, you can expect to hear your favorite songs, her hit songs, unreleased songs, new songs, but if this is your first Jewel show, you will be surprised to also hear Jewel telling stories between the songs, and a lot of them, if she's in a talkative mood.

She really has a talent for comedy. Some of her stories have become quite famous among the fans, for example the Drug Bust/YWMFM story, the Kermit the Frog/WWSYS story, the Can I see your boobs/Race Car Driver story, the Bob Dylan must me gay/Sometimes It Be That Way story.

My favorite thing during those stories is to look at Jewel's face !! And her face in that picture is typical Jewel sharing a story with her audience

I just thought I'd choose another picture of Jewel on stage telling a story to illustrate my "song of the week" pick.

In 2004, Jewel was the "star" of a L'Oreal Feria ad campaign "Colour of your voice".

The TV spot was directed by Matthew Rolston, who also directed several videos for Jewel, including Foolish Games, Jupiter, What's Simple Is True, Again & Again. It featured Jewel performing Yes U Can.

I don't think that campaign was a real success...I've seen the ad a few times in different magazines, but I've never seen it on tv.
