Walking through the lobby of his hotel, Adam Mason glanced at the television. President Obama stood at a podium, giving a speech about some sort of political nonsense. Mason barely paid attention, though did catch him saying something about change.
‘He’s right...’ Mason thought to himself. ‘Change is needed’
Mason went up the elevator to his room, where he pulled out his cell phone. He dialed a number, turned on the speaker phone and set it on the table. After ringing a few times, a man picked up.
Rosenberg here.
Rosenberg, it’s Mason
Treasure! Haven’t heard from you in a while! Calling to thank me for the match this week?
Match? Which match is that?
On Anarchy, you have a triple threat match.
Another one? Why can’t you get me a normal match. I’ve had two triple threat matches, a tag match, a match against a guy who belongs in a nursing home, and a match against a woman. What is wrong with you?
Nono, it’s the stipulation that you’re going to like. You’ve been telling me to get you out of your contract, well I found a way. The person who gets pinned or submits in this match gets fired; it’s a pink slip match.
Mason pauses at this, considering what was just said
So….if I lose, I get fired?
Yep Treasure, exactly what you wanted, you won’t have to worry about the XWF anymore.
Now, remind me. Why did I want to get out of this company? What was it that I told you.
The stern tone in Mason’s voice makes Rosenberg pause before answering.
Well…well…you thought the XWF would drag your value down. You wanted out so you could do better.
That’s right. Now, tell me, how would being fired from a crappy company look on my resume? Especially if I was fired because I lost a match to one of these jokes. Explain that one to me Rosenberg. I assume I’m not going against world-beaters here.
Well....no….you’re going against Donzig again…and some guy named Arisse.
So, I’m going against two guys who can’t win matches, and you’re telling me to lose to them so I can suffer the indignity of being fired? This is your genius plan? This is the best you can do? This is what I’m paying you for?
Rosenberg stutters a few unintelligible phrases, mixed with “buts” and “wanted out” before going silent on the other end of the line.
That’s what I thought. No, I won’t be fired from this company. For one, I won’t give them the pleasure of firing me, thinking they control me like that. I am not letting them dictate what happens, things are going down on my terms. Secondly, since I got here they’ve been trying to embarrass me. Matching me up with cripples and women…they’re trying to turn my career into a joke. They’re trying to turn me into a joke. Well, I won’t let that happen, and walking away now would be wayyy too easy. They need to realize what a mistake it is to mess with Adam Mason. They think it’s funny to mess with people who are better than them. To walk away now would give them exactly what they want. No, things are going to be different, and now I have business to take care of before I get out.
Well, that’s good then. You shouldn’t have any problem beating these guys. Hell, you can probably even choose who you want to beat. And don’t worry, I’ll get right now your next match for the pay-per-view, now that I know that you want to wrestle.
Yeah….about that. Look, as I said, things are going to be different around here. And this little episode has proven to me that you don’t have what it takes to be in this business, let alone represent a talent like me. Ever since I hired you, it’s been one disaster after the next. You clearly don’t know what I want or how to get it for me, so I think it’s time for a change around here.
Adam, Treasure, what are you saying man?
Sorry…or, well, not sorry, Rosenberg. You’re fired.
Rosenberg tried to get a word in edgewise, but Mason reached out and hung up the phone.
‘Well, that’s that. I guess I’ll have to get a new agent now. Someone more in-tune to my ideas. And I’m starting to get a lot of interesting ideas. I’ll take care of that after I take care of these urchins at the show. Things around here could start getting fun….
